Once
the capital of England, steeped in history, York
offers something for everyone, whatever the time
of year, whatever the weather. The centre is
compact and much of it is pedestrianised making
it easy to walk between the many places of
interest and attractions.
The main ones, each with a suggested minimum
visit time in hours plus map reference, are
listed below to help you plan your visit (click
here to see the map) Indoor
places to visit during the day.

| Shopping
in York |
| Parliament
Street, Coney Street and the Coppergate Centre
are the main shopping areas in the centre of York
where you will find a wide variety of stores
including the big national chains, department
stores, fashion shops, banks and
bureau-de-change. Newgate Market off Parliament
Street offers open-air stall markets every day
Monday through to Saturday. Stonegate,
Low Petergate, High Petergate and Goodramgate
offer a wide variety of independent, specialised
shops. The McArthur Glen Designer Outlet, located
at the A19/A64 intersection about 3 miles from
the centre, offers a wide range of shops selling
designer labels at discount prices.

| Indoor
things to do of an evening |
Have
a meal and a drink in one of the many excellent
restaurants or pubs. Perhaps you would like to
take in a film at one of the three multi screen
cinemas, or see a performance at one of the two
attractive and quite old theatres.
Alternatively you may enjoy a live touring music
show or other entertainment in the Barbican
Centre (N).
